Allen Toussaint “Night People”
Each year I make it down to The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, there is a moment, whether it is a set of music, a party, a dinner, something that sets that year apart from the others. This year that moment came early Friday morning while I was standing on S. Peters St. outside of Down On The Bayou II, a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation @ The Howlin’ Wolf. A brown two-tone ‘70’s era Rolls Royce slides up, and the driver motions for me to come over. Lo and behold, the driver is none other then Allen Toussaint. He asked who was playing, I gave him the run down and asked if he was going to come in and play, he started to answer, “I don’t know, maybe we’ll…” and rolled away into the early morning.
Music royalty cruising the streets of the city just to check in on the night people and see who’s playing during the wee hours…only in New Orleans!
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings were stranded in Europe due to the Icelandic Volcano, so the funky Meters set was moved up and this killer set of music filled the void.
The funky Meters joined by and rotating in and out with JoJo Herman, Bobby Lee Rodgers, Ivan Neville, Luther and Cody Dickinson, Oteil and Kofi Burbridge, and others
Close to an hour of some of the funkiest music around coming from the amazing Mushroom Stage at the Wanee Festival…play this loud!
